If you use a Dvorak-layout keyboard, typing in te reo Māori can be a bit of a pain on a computer. If you don't want to have to hold a key down and press a number (not even a consistent one; why is it 9 for ā but 7 for ē?), the usual answer from everybody is to use the US International keyboard — but that means reverting to a QWERTY layout which is entirely out of the question!
I have created a keyboard layout (using the brilliant Ukelele) that continues the spirit of other accented characters on a Mac (holding Option and typing a letter). To write a macron-accented character using this layout, press Option-Space, let go, then type the letter. For a capital letter, hold Shift while you type the letter.
As a gesture of goodwill to QWERTY users, I have a layout that works the same way for you, too.
